I read this book recently. Sometimes I like to post reviews on books that aren't really about homeschooling, but are still inspirational for all us Christian women trying to go our best every day.
This book was a bargain find at Dollar General. I had read a couple other books by Robin Lee Hatcher, and found her interesting. This book touched me personally.
The story centers around a woman named Katherine. She seems to have a very blessed life. Her husband is respected by his church and community. Her grown daughters are happily married and expecting children. Katherine is busy in church ministry. It all seems wonderful... and comfortable.
Then, the bottom seems to fall out. Allegations are made about Katherine's husband that are both personal and ethical. Suddenly reporters are camped outside the door. She has to question her faith in God and her faith in her husband. Her children takes sides. The entire family is put under a pressure that is overwhelming and devastating. Like how real life can feel, one thing after another occur until you just can't take anymore.
This book touched me because, so often as Christians, we think everything should work out in our favor. Our faith is not strong enough to stand through not only hard times, but times where things just make no sense. We lash out or we hide within ourselves the pain we feel. God seems to be distant, our prayers not answered. We assume our lives should be one way with Christ, and the reality is often quite different and sometimes very painful.
Is our faith strong enough to handle the attacks from the enemy that come through other people, sickness, hard times, and devastating loss? This is a question I've had to ask myself recently. This is a question my whole family has had to deal with over the last couple of years. We push on, sometimes on autopilot, sometimes begging God to just lift us up so we don't feel we are drowning. The Perfect Life deals with the emotions and fears that can happen when your entire world seems to be changed and in chaos, and how to trust in God even when you wonder if He's forgotten you.
