This book is a book that Laura will use right after Christmas. I like to pre-read many of the books that Laura is going to read independently. Last night, I settled down with Little Miriam of Galilee.
The story takes place in Galilee in the days of Jesus. Miriam is a young Jewish girl that lives with her family. Because of unfair taxes and a poor crop, her family is facing the fact that they may lose their lands and have to move. Little Miriam begins to pray for a miracle. Every time she thinks God is going to work one way, He doesn't. The miracle that is provided is unexpected and truly magnificent.
I was very impressed with this book. The story is very interesting, and the descriptions of Jewish life are not boring, but add to the story in a very meaningful way. Little Miriam is a ten year old girl that I believe most little girls and boys will relate to. It describes how hard even the children of the time worked. It talks about some of the Jewish customs and beliefs. I got so wrapped up in the story and plight of this girl that I didn't realize I was learning so much about the times of Jesus.
I was very happy at the impact of Jesus in this novel, even on this family that had never met Him. I am quite excited for Laura to get the opportunity to read this book. I think it will be one she will enjoy immensely. She will study this book with the history of the days of Jesus right after we begin school after Christmas Break. This story is truly a heart-touching story.
