Seeing Some Georgia Sights

We went to see a natural spring today.  Crawfish Spring was beautiful.  The water was so clear!

I took several pictures.

We then went to the Gordon-Lee Mansion in Chickamauga.  It was picturesque and full of southern charm.

The tree-lined path up to the Mansion was gorgeous!

The building is so historical.  Markers are spaced out, telling some of the amazing history of the area. The inside shows how the mansion looked during the Civil War.

The outside has some of the prettiest flowers and sitting areas.

We then went back to the Chickamauga National Battlefield Park.  The area is so large that one day wasn't enough to explore.  We went hiking today through the woods.

Monuments were scattered throughout the Park.  I found it unifying that the monuments honored both the Union and Confederate soldiers and each State that fought on the land during the Civil War.

Signal Mountain

Megan at Signal Point

We went sightseeing yesterday.  We headed to Chatanooga and went up Signal Mountain.  Megan, who was petrified of the mountains on the way here, fell in love with them.
Laura with her friend Diana at Signal Point

We started at Signal Point and then moved on to hiking.  We hadn't planned to hike, and three of us in flip-flops or sandals made the hike much more challenging.
Megan, overlooking a cliff, with our friend Roger explaining  that Lincoln had stood there.

We did it though.

We saw some beautiful sights and walked until my legs were jelly.  Megan did awesome for her first hike.  She kept going on some pretty rough terrain.

Laura did well for her first hike, but she didn't love it.  While her father and I love hiking, Laura doesn't.  I'm hoping she'll want to come to our summer hiking trips, but she might not be very enthusiastic.  She loved the views and hanging with her friend, however.

We still have other places we wish to see while we are down south visiting our friends.  I'm excited to see the sights!

Get Outside!

I was very discouraged today.  I tried new shoes.  Actually I bought them at Goodwill a few months ago.  They are great shoes, but I didn't try them on.  The result are two huge blisters on my feet.  So... Going outside the rest of the day with the snow couldn't happen.  I may have to wear slippers to the store tomorrow.

I was so bummed by it.  Silly, I know, but my outside time has become vital to me. From my morning walks to later walks with my loved ones to playing with my youngest or taking my nephew to the park, I have fallen back in love with being outside!

When I'm walking or enjoying the fresh air, the health issues I have don't bother me much.  The aching muscles and joints don't hurt.  In the house I always feel like I'm freezing.  Outside, when I'm walking and moving, even if I'm cold, I'm not freezing. Yes, I am hypothyroid.  I am getting treatment, but it is a S-L-O-W process.

I have noticed that the outside time is amazing for Megan.  She tends to focus a little better in our homeschool when I let her go outside, even if just to walk our dog.  Sending her outside to play in the afternoons, even when it's cold, means she sleeps better.  For an ADHD insomniac, these are remedies I like that don't include medication.

Lately I've been spending a lot of time remembering who I used to be.  I was an outdoor girl as a child.  Being outside did not stop my reading obsession.  There was always a tree to read under or a fence line to walk (while reading). I remember the girl that loves adventure, on one Grandmother's farm or with the other going to the theater and out to eat.

I'm remembering the young woman I used to be.  Before I was a Christian, before I became a stay at home wife and mother, I was a woman that traveled a little.  I feel like God is reminding me of who I was, because she isn't dead.

As a new Christian, I buried my past.  The old me is gone.  I'm a new creation, right?  But, God created me.  The mistakes I made and the sin I chose and the shame and guilt, that should be gone.  Christ took that upon himself. For some reason, I let go of all the things that made me who I am because I felt that person didn't have much value.

The things I loved, I laid aside.  Being outside with my kids became them playing outside while I made dinner.  The fun travels were usually substituted by doctor's appointments and soccer games and friends... All for the children.  A couple times a year the hubby and I would go out for an evening.

It wasn't until recently that the 'ole travel bug came back.  Mostly, I just felt cooped up.  I liked going for walks outside. It didn't feel as strenuous as working out inside.  It relaxes me.

I began considering the differences in how I grew up and how my youngest daughter is growing up. I realized she needs to be outside AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Yes, her ADHD would be helped, but I also believe spending hours outside is an education in itself.

Snow and cold temps make it a bit discouraging at times.  My walking shoes aren't waterproof.  The blister-makers from Goodwill may keep the water out, but the pain isn't worth it to me. And it's the holiday season.  Extra funds for waterproof shoes will have to wait.

Longing to be outside opens the door to more nature walks, more field trips, and more time to just get away.  It definitely opens the door to adventures.

Get outside and have some adventures.

Weekend Getaway

Sometimes a break is greatly deserved.  We went out of town this past weekend to visit friends that live a couple hours away.  It was so wonderful!

We had a some ice cream cake for Laura's 15th birthday on Saturday.
Megan at the Riverwalk

On Sunday, after a great time with the Lord at church, we went to the Riverwalk in their town.  It was beautiful!

It is such a BEAUTIFUL area!

We had such a great time and look forward to returning when we can.

Weekend Retreat

Last week I had the opportunity to get away for the weekend.  I went with some wonderful ladies from my church.  We rented a beautiful apartment-type dwelling on a golf course about 45 minutes away.  It was lovely.
The views were magnificent.  Due to computer issues, I wasn't able to share much till now.
We got to spend two days and nights focusing on God.  We worshiped together, prayed together, and had some time just to relax and unwind.  We ate some amazing meals.  It was such a joy to be able to get away from the day to day routine, refresh ourselves in the Lord, and enjoy the company of other Godly ladies.
Not far away was a local amusement park.  It was closed for the season, but the view of the Ferris wheel and roller coaster was pretty.
Fall had definitely set in, and the trees were beautiful in the morning sun.
We didn't spend a lot of time outside.  We didn't need to.  The views from the windows afforded us so many glimpses of nature that we only had to enjoy.
I am so happy that I got the opportunity to get away and spend some time one on one with the Lord.  So often, I get busy.  I don't always take the time I need to with God.  I was reminded over the weekend that I am blessed and that I am loved very much by an amazing King, Jesus Christ.

The Leaf Project

The beauty of fall this year has left me admiring the wonder of God's creation.  The weather has been unseasonable warm and sunny.  The trees have been breathtaking, almost appearing to be on fire with the golds, yellows, oranges, and reds in the sun.
Megan catching leaves that blew off the tree.
I decided to have Megan collect some of the leaves.  In school, I remember collecting leaves and putting a paper over them, coloring with a crayon.  Do kids still do that?  I wanted to try that with Megan.
We went out and collected our leaves.  We took our time to look for a variety of different kinds.
We admired all the different colors and shapes we saw.
We looked at tree leaves, leaves from bushes, and even the ivy leaves growing on our garage.
We brought them in and colored over them with paper and crayons.  It was fun, and Megan had a very good time.  The time we spent outside in nature was a blast, and a nice addition to the nature books we have been reading about fall.

Depriving our Students of the Classics
