Well, maybe my Meggy isn't a "regular" eight year old. Maybe a British vocabulary is simply an excuse to read with a British accent (which I am sure I butcher). Maybe the lengthy descriptions paint a vivid scene in the mind of an imaginative girl (and her mama) of a little family and their big adventures.
We read the Borrowers Aloft a couple months ago. At first, as we read, I wondered the same thing as I had read above in reviews. But, after a brief couple of chapters, we were drawn into the world of the Borrowers.
I grew up with The Littles as a child, watching the cartoon on Saturday mornings. I remember being fascinated, and acting out many dating adventures with my dolls. In my adventures, my dolls weren't reinacting my world; they were small people living in a big world.
This is why doll houses are a fascination. It is not, to me, simply small replicas of our world. Instead it is their world, a haven in a large, dangerous world.
I bought the entire Borrowers series off of Amazon. We moved on to the Borrowers, the first book in the series. We loved it more than The Borrowers Aloft! As we read the last chapter tonight, Megan began pleading for more.
We had been switching between the Little House on the Prairie series and the Borrowers. I guess Mary and Laura will have to wait. We HAD to find out what happened to Pod, Homily, and Arrietty!
We devoured at least two chapters of the Borrowers Afield before I sent Meg to bed. My throat was beginning to get dry and scratchy from all the reading!
Our read aloud time has taken on is amazing adventures! We are enjoying the stories and that special time together. We read a lot of material for school, but the bedtime story time is always a favorite!
