Song of the Brook by Matilda Nordtvedt is the second in a series of three available through Abeka publishing and part of Abeka's reading program. Laura read the first novel, The Secret in the Maple Tree, last year in third grade. We re-read it this year before beginning the Song of the Brook. The third novel in the series, Message of the Mountain, is a sixth grade reader.
Song of the Brook continues where The Secret in the Maple Tree leaves off. Young Hilda and her family have arrived in Washington state to begin their life anew after their father hurt his back. Unfortunately, not everything goes as planned. The job Hilda's father was supposed to have didn't pan out, and the home they move into is not quite what they expected.
Song of the Brook also deals with lessons in jealousy and money management. Hilda's cousins seem very rich and have lots of nice things, which makes Hilda quite jealous. However, things aren't always what they seem and Hilda learns some lessons along the way. She also learns lessons on friendship and on death, when a family member becomes ill and is dying.
All through the book Hilda turns to God with her problems and challenges. I liked the example in that for Laura. Hilda might not have always done the right things, but she always trusted God to lead her and to correct her when she was wrong.
Laura said she liked this book more than The Secret in the Maple Tree. I do think the characters are more fully developed. I would strongly recommend this book, especially for young girls. Hilda is a character a young Christian girl can relate to. Hilda struggles, both in her attitudes and in her relationship with God. She longs to be the girl Jesus wants her to be, but sometimes lets her thoughts and actions get the better of her.
Life isn't easy for Hilda. I think that alone is a good example for children. Life isn't always easy, and sometimes it is tough to deal with the hardships and blows of life and still keep close to Jesus. This is a lesson for adults as well as children. The parents in Song of the Brook had a tough time, but maintained their relationship with God during the difficult circumstances.
