Reading Adventures - The School Story

Megan and I finished our latest read-aloud book tonight.  We took only a week or so to read The School Story by Andrew Clements.

I remember reading this book to Laura a few years ago (was it that long?) and loving the book and author.  It's an easy book to read aloud, with a fast paced story.  The characters are fun and relatable and interesting.  I decided to read it to Megan, even though the main characters are a bit older than Megan, because the book grabs the readers quickly into the story.

Our previous read aloud was The Little Princess.  The book is destined to be a favorite, but it doesn't flow as smoothly as a read aloud as I would like, especially with the large vocabulary and accents.  I chose The School Story as a more easy, light read in between more dense choices.

The School Story was perfect!  Megan begged for more chapters every night!  I usually complied because the chapters were short and engaging.

The School Story is a story about two sixth grade girls named Natalie and Zoe. Natalie is an author, and when she writes a book, Zoe loves it so much she wants to get Natalie's published.  What follows is the hilarious story of how these two girls, along with their English teacher, begin an adventure into the world of publishing.

Megan became engrossed in the story immediately.  She thought the character, Zoe, was hilarious.  We had a few discussions concerning topics the book brought up, such as lying and even name-calling.

Our read aloud time has become a favorite time of the night for me. Most of the time my daughter plays quietly while I read.  Tonight, instead, she snuggled with me as I finished the book.  It was a sweet time, just mommy and daughter.
