Courageous

banner

It seemed a no-brainer that Christians would flock to this movie on opening weekend.  I've been looking forward to this opening for months.  With the trilogy of Flywheel, Facing the Giants, and Fireproof, the makers of Courageous had a lot to live up to.

They succeeded.

I went today with some of the ladies of my church to see this movie.  I plan to go again later this week with my husband and children.

Courageous takes on the subject of Fatherlessness.  A couple of years ago my daughter, Tasha, researched the topic of fatherlessness for school.  The statistics she found were shocking.  Fatherlessness in our society is an epidemic with horrible repercussions, but we don't even recognize the fallout as being as severe as it truly is.  I also researched fatherlessness for a sermon I gave to our local youth group.  I was saddened when, out of the twenty youth in the service, only two or three had their biological father in the home.

Courageous does a good job of dealing with fatherlessness.  This movie doesn't cast blame for the problems.  It deals solely with what the Bible says about fathers, and what Christian fathers should do in their roles as husbands and fathers.  In typical Sherwood Film fashion, one second I was laughing, the next crying.  The movie draws the viewer into the lives of five men, four of whom are police officers.  When a tragedy happens in the life of one of them, the men face what is truly important and what kind of fathers they have been.

The men make a movie before God and their families... a Resolution.  Just reading it, without even seeing the movie, is inspiring.  My prayer for this movie is that it will touch the lives of Fathers all over our country and worldwide.   Go see this movie.

THE RESOLUTION

I do solemnly resolve before God to take full responsibility for myself, my wife, and my children.

I WILL love them, protect them, serve them, and teach them the Word of God as the spiritual leader of my home.

I WILL be faithful to my wife, to love and honor her, and be willing to lay down my life for her as
Jesus Christ did for me.

I WILL bless my children and teach them to love God with all of their hearts, all of their minds, and all of their strength.

I WILL train them to honor authority and live responsibly.

I WILL confront evil, pursue justice, and love mercy.

I WILL pray for others and treat them with kindness, respect, and compassion.

I WILL work diligently to provide for the needs of my family.

I WILL forgive those who have wronged me and reconcile with those I have wronged.

I WILL learn from my mistakes, repent of my sins, and walk with integrity as a man answerable to God.

I WILL seek to honor God, be faithful to His church, obey His Word, and do His will.

I WILL courageously work with the strength God provides to fulfill this resolution for the rest of my life and for His glory.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. – Joshua 24:15
