In my quest to simplify our homeschooling, adding subjects shouldn't enter my mind. Yet, sometimes that is what happens when you think and pray about what you want to teach your children. I want my children to have real life examples of great Christians to be their examples. We are studying many heroes from the Bible, but I wanted to add in some that weren't in the Bible. I decided to add a missionary study. Right now it is scheduled every other day, and it is a read aloud... so that my daughters and I can share the stories together. (Yes, I will include Megan if she'll sit still that long.) We read about George Muller a couple of years ago, and Laura still counts that as her favorite book. Obviously, the story made a deep impression on her. I think she has read the book at least twice on her own.
That is what I want... for my daughter to be impacted by the stories we read. I feel like we have gotten away from some of our basics in some quest to do this and that. Reading, even reading aloud, should be important... and not just because the story may complement the history. Yes, that is nice, but not necessarily of the utmost importance. Honoring God is of the utmost importance.
I don't want overkill. We'll try this for a week or two and see what other adjustments to the schedule need to be made.
