Making a Clay Cartouche

Last week for Heart of Dakota, Laura made a clay cartouche. We made it from the home made clay recipe in the book. Here, we ran into issues. It wouldn't dry. I finally put it in the oven and baked it dry. On the cartouche we etched the lady Pharoah Hatshepsut's name in hieroglypic witing. After it was dried in the oven, the etchings weren't as deep as they were before. We then painted it with brown paint, trying to get paint into the etchings, and then wiping off the paint with a papertowel.

The finished project wasn't quite how I thought it would turn out, but it was still pretty neat. Laura will remember the project mostly because she thought the dough was icky.
We were supposed to put the cartouche on wax paper, but when it wouldn't dry I moved it to foil to bake. It stuck, so we just left it on the foil.
Heart of Dakota is so fun!
