This book is one of the core books for Heart of Dakota's Preparing Hearts for His Glory. It is used with other books to give a view of history as HIS story. Laura and I both LOVED this!
The book's main characters are Marc and Amy and their Grandfather. Marc is a war story buff, but his interests go to a deeper level when Grandpa begins to tell stories of war that the kids didn't expect to hear as war stories. Grandpa, along with his box full of symbolic figurines, begins to tell the kids in the midst of their daily lives, stories from the Bible. The twist is that he is telling this as the ultimate war story. Grandpa's stories lead the children and the readers to a deeper understanding of God's plan of redemption. The stories don't just talk about the characters in the stories, but about what God and his character.
Laura and I read this book faithfully with the lesson plans for months. It was such a great addition to the curriculum. It added such depth to the studies of history. The story in a story kept us intrigued as Bible stories we had heard many times before came to life with the perspective given in Grandpa's Box.
We don't know much about Amy and Marc outside of Grandpa's shop where he sells antiques. However, we see that ordinary children going to school and learning about the past are shown how Christ has been part of history since the beginning when the war with Satan, our enemy, started.
Again, this is another wonderful book chosen by Heart of Dakota.
