Summer, for me, means a chance to read some stuff that I don't always have time for while teaching and taking care of the kids. Today, I spent the day not feeling well. I couldn't go 100 mph like usual. So, I settled down with a library book.
I was a huge fan of the Left Behind series of books. I picked up the latest by Tim LaHaye a couple days ago at the library. It's titled Edge of Apocalypse. It's a limited loan since it is still fairly new. I can only have it for a week. I had started it a couple days ago, but today I sat down and finished it in a few hours.
The story takes place in the near future. It centers around a man named Joshua Jordon and his family. The book brings up hypotheticals that, with the current global situation, don't seem too far off base. Globalism? Nuclear Threats? A trashed American economy? Yeah, these aren't scenarios that seem like they could never happen anymore.
In typical LaHaye style, Biblical prophesy is weaved in the story in a seamless fashion. Are we close to the time of Jesus return? True, Jesus says the time can not be predicted. However, there are signs He gave to His disciples. How many of those signs have been or are being fulfilled right at this very minute?
While I haven't gotten as emotionally attached to these characters as I did with the characters in Left Behind, I am giving it some time. I've only been a part of their lives for one book, one adventure. Some of the characters don't seem to have much depth yet. I am assuming there will be more, that this will become a series. I feel for the main character in this book, Joshua. I want to know him a little better. I look forward to seeing him discover God for himself. I hope to get to know his family better. However, this was a good beginning.
If you like the Left Behind series, and want a good summer read, pick up Edge of Apocalypse.
