"Homeschooling is another area the Progressives target simply because the government does not get a seat at the kitchen table. Progressives label those who homeschool their children as 'backwards', 'socially undeveloped', or religious zealots-but those attacks are just diversions from their real concern about a lack of State control."
--Glenn Beck in the book Common Sense--
I don't generally gravitate toward expressing political opinions. I'm going to try to refrain a bit here too. However, I do totally recommend the book Glenn Beck's Common Sense. As I pray for direction for my home and my homeschool, I find that God keeps putting books like this into my hands. They aren't books that target one political party, but rather target both and the problems that have arisen from our government.
Glenn Beck wrote a book that hits hard at "Big Government". He hit on the deficit and how this is going to decimate our economy and inflation. He talked about socialism and how The United States of America is turning to Socialism. Mostly Glenn Beck talked about how Americans need to stand up and find common sense solutions instead of allowing our government to just keep throwing money at problems with the strings of less freedom.
No one can tell me that our economy is getting better. The general question where I live is "How bad is it going to get?" Glenn Beck wrote the book to motivate Americans to see past what the government wants them to believe, and take back our great country.
What does that entail? Truthfully, Mr. Beck would be happy with a complete fresh start in the House and the Senate... and the Oval Office too. If we are going to have people serving our country in politics, then it should be about serving the people not themselves and whoever donates the most money to their campaign. I agree, but I also see an apathy from American citizens about their ability to make a difference. I also see that it has been easy to play a blame game, and not all those that are suffering in the poor economy made poor financial decisons.
I have stated before that, as I walk through my town, the empty houses are on nearly every block. The same goes for any of the local towns. Were all these people financially irresponsible or "living beyond their means'? No. Oh, I am sure that there were a few.
The familiar strain around here is not one of irresponsibility. Many of the men and women losing their homes and all they have worked for are ones that have been working for companies since high school or college. Those companies are closing down, moving their businesses to Mexico, or just laying off in record numbers. One company laid off a large portion of employees after boasting that they had never laid anyone off in their history. They have been in this community for 30 years
Common Sense delves into some of the problems with education in America. One of the issues is that the education of our children has moved from the responsibility of the local government to the state to the federal government... eventually leading to the global level. The push for education and the welfare of our children is being taken global. Shouldn't parents have a say in the decisions concerning their children? According to the U.N., the answer is not a yes.
Glenn Beck's view on how the government wants to handle homeschooling touches the nerves of this homeschooling mom. I honestly believe it is a control issue. Test scores prove over and over again that homeschooling works amazingly well, and public school is failing the children. Any person using the guise of homeschooling for abuse of children is brought to the forefront like every homeschooling person is doing the same. I ask you, when teachers are accused and convicted of abusing a student, does that mean all teachers are abusing students? That sounds crazy. The same goes for homeschooling parents.
When I hear some person's opinion that teaching about Christianity in a homeschool setting is the equivalent of abuse, I want to ask the question "Who Made You God?" I will die for the right to serve Jesus, and I will raise my children with a foundation of The Bible. If it becomes illegal in America to do this, then our country has failed and it is time to form a new one. This country was founded on Christian principles, and needs to get back to some of those.
"The false idea that money can solve any problem isn't confined to education. We all started to believe that notion. If we didn't have the money, we acted like we did. We felt like we deserved to have it all- big homes, big cars, big TVs. Even as our families became smaller, our homes got bigger, with the average home size growing from 983 square feet in 1950 to 2,512 square feet today. Naturally, those bigger homes came with a bigger price tag." Common Sense
My grandparents lived in their small home for over 50 years. They worked hard. My grandfather was an electrician and a World War II veteran. My grandmother raised three boys in that small home. One of them died in Vietnam. Another served in Korea. They had gardens, lived within their means, and stuck by the lessons they learned from the Great Depression. When they were older, they got to do many wonderful things such as travel and spoil grandchildren. That didn't happen in their twenties or thirties. That happened after saving and investing and living frugally and working hard year after year.
Why do we, as Americans, think we deserve to have what took them their whole lives to earn and save for? Why do we think we deserve it all without paying the price? Why do we look at the condition of our schools and not get angry? Why do we see that the values we founded this country on, like honesty and hard work, have disappeared? Why are we not getting angry enough about this to reclaim our families? Why is divorce at nearly 50%? Why is that alright? What happened to fighting for our families, sacrificing for our children and spouses?
I am glad Glenn Beck and others are speaking up. My only hope is that Americans might listen.
