Laura is in the middle of reading this book on her own. I have just finished book three in the series. I am also reading the Elsie Dinsmore series.
I love these books. They have much of the charm of the Little House series, but with such a strong Christian aspect to them that I find myself getting a lot from them myself. Millie loves Jesus, and her growth and trust in the Lord are so inspiring to read about in the story.
Millie's Unsettled season is the first in the Millie series for the Life of Faith books. Millie is a young girl of thirteen. She is the oldest of seven other brothers and sisters. Set in the 1830s, Millie is heartbroken to learn that her family is moving from Lansdale, Ohio to the frontier town of Pleasant Plains, Indiana. She must leave behind friends and all she knows.
I was lucky enough to find both the Elsie and Millie books at a local library. I did buy the first Millie book at a discount Christian bookstore for Laura for Christmas. I read the first chapter to Laura one evening, and she was hooked. She has been slowly reading it since. The books have a bit higher reading level than Laura usually reads, but they are so wonderful that she is plowing through them anyway. I know there are dolls and accessories that can be bought, but that isn't in our plans.
Historical books aren't usually my favorite. There are some wonderful exceptions, and the Life of Faith series has just joined that list. The characters in the books are sure to feel like friends. I, personally, like both Elsie and Millie. Every time I think that I like one better than the other, I read the next book for one of the girls and change my mind. They are both exceptional characters. Originally written by Martha Finely, the books were tremendously popular in the late 1800s. They have since been re-written with modern language and added Christian emphasis.
I am hoping that Laura will enjoy them as much as I am. She certainly loves the first Millie book, Millie's Unsettled Season.
