Making Waves

Megan is reading all about the seashore in science with Heart of Dakota! Today she got to do an experiment in how waves are formed.

It was such a simple, yet fun experiment. Some water in a dish and a blow dryer.  On low we made gentle waves lapping at the edge. Add a little more direct wind and we had the makings of choppy water.  However, turn the blow dryer in high and we could create our own hurricane!

Megan already knew the wind had some to do with the waves, but seeing the demonstration made the understanding much more concrete.

Just last week we did a different experiment with water.  Megan learned that the water pushes back on items.  Dense, heavy items, like a coin sink.  Lighter items, even if bigger, float because the water is more sense than the air inside some items.  We used her soccer ball.

Megan loves science. All the hands-on experiments make learning so exciting for her!
