Changing Traditions

Over the years the Christmas traditions in our home changed.  As my husband and I grew in our relationship with the Lord, our Christmas traditions grew to reflect that love of Jesus.

This year another change happened that bothered my girls.

With the move we made a few months ago, we discovered our lease says "no live Christmas trees".  We have gone to "pick a tree" every year since we were married. The fun memories made by this tradition made the switch to an artificial tree difficult.

But... We are not going to dishonor our lease.

Christmas is about Jesus, not a tree.

Megan went with Daddy and Mommy to pick out a Christmas tree at the store. It wasn't the tradition.  We picked a little six-foot artificial tree to fit in a cozy corner in our apartment.

Tonight my older girls will come over.  We'll decorate the little tree together.  It may not be one of our large trees cut from the woods, but we'll make memories anyway.

It is too easy to get wrapped up (pun intended) in the past.  Traditions are wonderful.  We have many that bring meaning and joy to our holiday season.  I choose to embrace where I am right now, cherishing my time with God and family.  If we have to forgo a tradition, I know Christmas will still be about Jesus.
