There is a genius about these books. I use Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read as my main phonics program because is it nearly self-teaching with the DVD lessons. Megan had done so well with it that I just purchased the first grade level. However, the McGuffey primer coordinates very well.
The McGuffey Primer has words that challenge Megan's growing reading skills. She must work to sound out the unfamiliar words. This is greatly expanding her reading ability and growing her confidence!
We are going through the McGuffey primer slowly. Each lesson takes at least a week. We do NOT rush through the lessons. Each one must be mastered before we move on. This week I went back and reviewed the previous three lessons. By the time we finish a lesson, Megan can read it easily, and write the words.
The McGuffey readers were used at a time before our dumbed down, grade-level reading levels were assigned. It is often difficult to assess the readers actual reading levels because they are so much more challenging in their vocabulary, sentence structure, and depth of concepts than our reading materials today. From what I've been able to discover, the primer is at least a 1st and possibly 2nd grade level. With this knowledge, there is no rush to get through them.
My older daughters are in the third reader. The third reader is roughly a 6th through 8th grade reader. However, my 9th grader that has struggled in reading finds this reader challenging, yet she is enjoying the stories. My goal is to get her through the 4th reader by graduation, ensuring she can handle the more challenging material she might encounter if she moves on to college. Mixed with a literature-based curriculum, I have no doubt her skills will soar.
