Starting Over

I am trying to patiently wait for my order to arrive.  Last week I ordered Heart of Dakota's  (HOD) Little Hearts for His Glory for Megan.  After a semester of trying to make my own plans, I  knew that I was missing out on some key aspects in my daughter's education.

Megan used HOD's Little Hands to Heaven for preschool last year, and it was such an amazing year!  Then, to save money, I thought I would put my own materials together this year.  Ironically, I used some of the same choices that HOD uses.  However, the results weren't the same.

Without HOD's teacher guide, there was no dramatic play activities to make the stories come alive, no arts and crafts to go along with the lessons. It was all pretty dry and blah!

I have decided to just begin at the beginning of the LHFHG guide for all materials except math and phonics.  For phonics, we will continue on with our Hooked on Phonics and McGuffey Primer.  For math, I will go through the hands-on activities.  I will go through some of them as review, but plan to start at the level where Megan is working.  She's doing well in math so I don't want her to backtrack much.

As for history and science, Megan and I will be re-reading what we have already read this year.  However, I feel that it will be very different with the activities, crafts, and other history book going along with it.

Personally, I am relieved.  While Megan has learned a lot this year, it has not been the best way to learn.  Using mostly workbooks, even awesome ones like the ones from Christian Light, has become a bit... Uh.... Routine?  While Megan's fine motor skills have soared, she often doesn't want to do school. This was a big change from her attitude last year!

I'm trying to patiently wait.  It's only been a few days since I placed the order.  (The email has come through that my order has shipped! YIPEE!!)  However, school today was a struggle.  My five year old whizzed through phonics, but then lost all focus.  Since I know that her new program is on the  way, I kind of felt like her... Unmotivated.
