I didn't expect something like this to happen to us. Bringing confusion and a bit of stomach tingling fear, we actually experienced a case of mistaken identity. I don't think it has happened to us before... and I pray it never happens again.
My oldest daughter received a phone call last night from a man that said he was a police officer. He told her that he needed to talk to her about a picture, which could be of her, taken at a convenience store in the area. Confused, my daughter set up a time to have the officer come to our house. We then made some phone calls to verify that it was an actual police officer that called her and not a prank of some sort.
Then, this morning, my daughter found out that the police had questioned an acquaintance of hers about this same picture. That made me and my daughter nervous. I am certain that she hasn't committed any sort of crime, but the police don't usually go around asking questions about us either.
When I prayed about my nervousness, I was reminded that God doesn't want me to live in fear. Still, that lump in my stomach remained.
Two police officers arrived at our house earlier than expected. Immediately, when the officer walked in, he spotted my daughter and smiled. He explained the situation in sketchy details, and then showed my daughter and I the now infamous picture. It wasn't my daughter at all. However, it is someone that has a similar coat and hairstyle close to what my daughter used to have a couple years ago.
I don't know what this girl that resembles my daughter did, but I am glad the mess is cleared up. I feel silly now that I spent any time worried about what was going on. I know that God has everything in His hands. The whole situation was just something unfamiliar to us, and that brought confusion and unanswered questions.
My daughter is now safely in her bedroom, working on her college work, and feeling her own sense of relief. Yes, even she was wondering what she did to warrant such attention from law enforcement. Now, though, we are both happy that we have an interesting story to tell and that's all.
