RV - A Movie Review

I realize this movie came out four years ago.  My family hadn't seen it.  I rented it from the library because I wanted a family movie that was funny.  It was rated PG, and too many movies are rated PG-13 or R and are still being billed as "family" movies.

Each member of the Munro family has been planning on their summer vacation in Hawaii. Dad (Robin Williams) changes the plans as a way to keep his boss happy and spend time with his family.  His family has drifted apart as the children have gotten older and work has taken precedence.   What ensues is a funny trip with a family traveling in a style they aren't used to.

The movie is funny.  I was disturbed at first by the way one family was portrayed.  The Munros meet another RV family on their trip named the Gornicke Family.  The wife is dressed trampy.  The husband acts not so intelligent.  The children act slow at first.  The family is a traveling, homeschooling family that live in their RV.  I kind of groaned inside that the family was going to be such a poor representation of homeschoolers.

At the end, however, the family may still be quirky but they are redeemed.  The turn out to be nice, caring, smart people with close bonds with each other.  The Munro family, in fact, longs for the kind of relationships they see modeled in their new friends.

I watched this movie, wanting a comedy, and finding a little more.  I guess so many families deal with the same issues of disconnect that the movie shows.  I know when I worked full time I felt kind of that way.  It was harder to maintain time with my family and keep us close.  I guess I'm lucky that I get to spend so much time with most of my children.  The bonds we are developing seem to be so much deeper than before I was with them so much.

I laughed at my children because this movie brought out a desire in them to do something like RV around the country.  I don't know that we ever will, but it would be wonderful to show them so much of America that way.  I've read of others that have done it, and if we had the money I might consider the chance.  For now, we are stationary and just fine with that option.  Local trips seems to suit us for now.
