Learning about pollenation in the desert

We did an experiment today to help Laura learn about pollination. We are studying the desert. Learning how a cactus is pollinated is not something I ever remember studying in school. We began with making a "saguaro flower" (a cup surrounded with a coffee filter petals). Then, with the rim coated with "seeds"(sugar), Laura tried to drink the nectar with her "bat tongue".

She was successful, but it required getting her face in the plant and getting some seeds on her.

She wasn't too happy about that. (Mom thought it was funny.)

Seeing how seeds stick to animals showed her how pollen seeds get spread from plant to plant. I don't think she truly understood until she had that visual literally stuck on her face.

Then, while this has nothing to do with science, she went and read about mummies and pyramids.

This week was a good one. I feel we are learning a lot and making progress.
