This week was a full week. Laura worked very diligently and was usually done by noon. She has developed a lot of independence in her work.
BIBLE - We still aren't working on Prims. Laura read about Samuel and Saul in Old Testament Stories. In the New Testament she is reading the book of Mark
MATH - Laura did five lessons this week in Abeka Arithmetic. She is coming along very well in math right now. Abeka does something unique at this point. Instead of focusing on multiplication by itself, it combines multiplication with division and fractions. In one week Laura my learn her times by 2, dividing by half, and divided by 2. It works well for her.
LANGUAGE ARTS - Laura has been studying synonyms and antonyms this week. Laura missed three on her spelling test, however we never gave her a pretest.
SOCIAL STUDIES - Laura studied some American Holidays this week. She read books on Columbus Day, Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, and St. Patrick's Day (because it was fun). We also talked a little about Flag Day and Bill of Rights Day.
SCIENCE - This week was a study of butterflies. Laura read a lot of books on butterflies and watched a Magic School Bus episode about butterflies. It wasn't the same as watching an actual butterfly hatch, but maybe when spring comes that will be something we can look for.
WRITING - Laura finished her Harcourt Flash Kids cursive writer and began using A Reason for Handwriting. She has only done a couple pages, but so far she seems to be working nicely. Next week will get more challenging as we begin to write Bible verses.
READING - Laura read The Sword in the Stone this past week. Together we read In Grandma's Attic. Laura loved In Grandma's Attic. The stories were wonderful and we had such a good time with this book. It was nice that they were Christian based. I believe books like this influence Laura's thinking and heart. When she reads a Christian story about a family, especially one with a little girls like her, I know that it builds Laura's faith just a bit.
I have had sick kids off and on for three weeks. When children are sick, even bigger kids, it takes a lot of time. As a consequence Laura hasn't been able to do many activities like Iwanted. I hope to be able to get back to some activities and projects soon.
