Laura actually accomplished quite a lot today. But even more important was the good time we had reading. I was reading her Little House in the Big Woods, and we got to the chapter about the bears. I don't know which part Laura thought was funnier...the mom slapping a big bear thinking it was a cow, or the dad clubbing a tree truck thinking it was a bear. Funny stuff that definitely caught my daughter's attention.
We got her math book in today. I like it. The book is a bit simple in the beginning, but we'll cover just parts that Laura needs to fill in some gaps or for review. I can't start at the beginning and just do a unit a day or we'll never finish. Plus, Laura would be bored. I want her to gain some ground, not lag.
I had ordered the A Beka spelling book too just to compare it with the Modern Curriculum Press. I think the words are kind of tough for a third grader. Plus, I thought there would be more work with the words...like worksheet pages. I don't know if I'll use it. I hate to waste money, but for now I'll just continue to use the MCP. Laura is doing well with that one. I think the pages are kind of blah and bland, but I have awhile to research the best spelling curriculums before next year.
Laura devoured the book called The Hopi by Ann Tomcheck in one day. She liked it, and read the whole thing. She hasn't really had much interest in the Indians. But after she read The Hopi, she said that she liked them because they grew crops instead of killing animals. I can understand that from her perspective. We live in Indiana where we are surrounded by corn and crops. She can relate to them.
