Laura has spent the entire evening (and part of the afternoon) watching the original Anne of Green Gables. I am totally delighted at this. Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorites. Who wouldn't fall in love with the little orphan girl? With her large imagination and vocabulary, love of books, and heart of gold, Anne is a character that lives in a girl's heart for a very long time.
The other characters touch a heart too, from Gilbert to Diana, from Matthew to Marilla. The movie, like the book, is full of humor and rich in characters that will feel like family before the movie is over.
I read the books many years ago. The movie touched me so dearly when I was younger. I am thrilled that Laura is enjoying the movies now. She does have enough of me in her that she has a soft spot for old-fashioned things. This has become apparent with Laura's love for Little House on the Prairie. Now, with Anne of Green Gables, another wonderful girl character has been introduced in my daughter's life and heart.
One of the benefits of homeschooling is that Laura can watch Little House on the Prairie or Anne of Green Gables over and over. She can live with the characters for a bit. She can read the books. She doesn't have to feel pressured to keep up with the other girls her age that are obsessed with the current pop stars. She can just relax and be a little girl, with little girl dreams.
