This past week, amidst illness and doctors, we began reading the book Ben and Me. We are reading it along with using the Learning History Through Living Books Study Guide for Ben and Me published by Queen Homeschool Supplies.
We only got in three days, but so far we are having such a great time. Laura looks forward to the study. She loves the story. It's perfect for her, written from the perspective of a mouse. And so far, she has loved the study guide. She laughed as her dad and I were searching our bibles looking for the source of one of Benjamin Franklin's maxisms. (Yes, we finally found it.)
I've gone through the study guide, and I truly feel this will be a very fun way to learn history. By the time Laura finishes with the book, she will have learned quite a bit about Benjamin Franklin. She will have studied the Declaration of Independence in more depth than I ever have. She won't just read it, she'll write it out and look up words she doesn't understand.
Already Laura drew a picture of the first Franklin stove, and wrote a description of the stove and why it was more efficient than fireplaces of the time. I learned right along with her because I can't remember ever learning much about Franklin's inventions. History even seems vague to me. It was always learn for the test, then much of the information I spent weeks learning would dissipate from my brain. This was fun, though. Between the mouse telling the story, drawing the picture, writing why the stove worked so well... so many parts of Laura's brain (and mine) were in play that it won't be easily forgotten.
Why can't all of learning be this fun? Laura would always love school if it were all this engaging.
I'm learning that not all "school" has to be boring.
