Delving into the Life of Benjamin Franklin

We will finish reading George Washington this week.  I was going to begin reading aloud Abigail Adams from the Sower Series with Laura, but decided to try out a Living History Study from Queen Homeschool.  I bought the book and study guide from Queen Homeschool to Ben and Me.  It fits in nicely with the period of time we have been studying.

Queen Homeschool sells very Christian, Charlotte Mason homeschool products.  They have intrigued me because of the strong Christian base. While other Charlotte Mason study plans are very good, I've been having a difficult time finding some of the books... especially in my small town libraries.  Even the internet doesn't have some of the literature that is the base for some of the subjects. The language arts programs from Queen Homeschool have gotten some very good reviews.  When I found the living history study guides, I thought one of those would be perfect to try out some of their products.

Over the next 4 to 6 weeks we get to delve into the life of Benjamin Franklin and the times in which he lived.  I am excited cause it looks like such an interesting way to learn about the time period.

In looking through the study guide, it looks almost like a unit study in the fact that there are activities and crafts and research projects.  However, it's really just a fun way to study the history time and the life of Benjamin Franklin. Unlike a unit study, it doesn't try to cover a bunch of other subjects and tie them all together.  It does tie in other events that were happening at the same time, or geography during the time period, but that only adds to the study of the time period and Benjamin Franklin.

I also bought a study guide for doing a sort of nature study through the use of a living book.  I'm not going to start that right away, however, because we are doing some other things for science right now.  Soon, though, nature studies outside may prove to be difficult with cold, snowy weather.  However, I want to still include nature studies as much as possible.  This may prove to be a fun way to do so.
