Making Butter

To go with our Little House on the Prairie series that we are reading,  Laura and I made butter today.  I got the idea from the associated content website at this address:  www.associatedcontent.com/article/1397740/homeschool_lesson_plan_using_the_little.html.

I bought a small container of Heavy Whipping Cream from Save a Lot.

I didn't have a glass jar, so I started with a regular glass covered with press and seal wrap.  However, after a few shakes it was leaking.  I poured the whipping cream into a sippy cup because it was all I could find where the lid would seal tight.

Laura shook and shook the cup.  I laughed at her when she started to complain that she was tired.  I told her this was easy.  Churning butter would have been a lot more difficult and time consuming.

The end result looked like whipped cream, and tasted like a combination of whipped cream and butter.  It was very light and fluffy, but VERY good.
We put the homemade butter on my homemade bread.  YUM!  It was actually quite good tasting.  It was different from what we are used to, but we are used to margarine.  There is a big difference.

Is this a history lesson or a science experiement?  LOL.
