For Science this week Laura read The Magic School Bus Insect Invaders. I love these books. As the kids read they are learning so much, but I don't think they realize it because they get so wrapped up in the stories.
This book was one I got last year, but we had never read. I needed something to fill the science slot until my materials arrived.
The premise of this book is simple. The class is studying insects. Instead of telling the children about bugs, she turned the class into insects.
Being the size of a bug has advantages. You can see the other bugs very close. The students learned about a lot of different bugs. Some were interesting, and some were scary when their predatory instincts meant they would eat other bugs.
It started with a study of ladybugs. Then it moved on to tarantulas and other spiders. Then the kids learned about Beetles, Ants, dragonflies, robber flies, praying mantis, and wasps. The book talks a lot about the hunting habits of insects. Laura thought some of them were gross, like when the ants ate the caterpillar. Gross, maybe, but an educational way to learn.
