Mamas... Take A Reading Break with "School" Books

My library card won't work.  A movie forgotten for the eight year old, a book long overdue for the 18 year old (darn Sadie Robertson for actually writing a book my daughter wants to read), a book of prayers I took too long to read through... And the late fees and overdue fines have added up to an amount that would have enabled me to have purchased the Sadie Robertson book.

But I really wanted to read.  I wanted a good Christian story.  I wanted it to be inspiring and exciting.  I have shelves of books.  But... Most of them are school books for the girls.  And yet, I was drawn there anyway.

Do other parents read their children's school books for fun?  I've read many as pre-reading, so I'll know what the kids will be reading. As the kids have gotten older and the books become more familiar, I stopped a lot of the pre-reading.  Silly of me...

I pulled a book off the shelf that Laura read a few years back.  Megan will read it in a couple of years.  Instead of boring or childish, I found myself thrust into Communist Russia, getting to know a young Christian boy named Alexi and his family.  From the first pages when the Secret Police question the family about their beliefs, I was hooked.  I am now with them in Siberia, where they were sent for the "crime" of following Jesus.  I am feeling the nervousness as Alexi must stand for Christ in his new school.  I feel the excitement of receiving an illegal Bible.  I worry for my father as he takes risks for other brothers and sisters in Christ.

I look forward to the next chapter.

I look forward to writing a more formal review of this book when I finish reading.

Homeschooling is more than an education for my children.  Teaching my children, reading their materials, I have gotten an education myself that is much more than academics.  I have found a grounding in Jesus that I believe many are missing today.  I am unlikely to find Alexi's Secret Mission at my local public library.  Yes, they have some Christian materials, but the selection is limited.

To any homeschool mamas out there, pick up a book for yourself.  Read one of those novels your kids are reading, and not as read aloud.  This time, do it for you.  Jesus taught through parables and stories.  He has inspired some amazing writers to put on paper many wonderful stories that honor Him and teach about Him and His followers.
