Early Graduation

When my now 21 year-old graduated from our homeschool, I really didn't think much about whether she "knew" enough. I just expected that she did. She went on to college and will graduate in May.  She is engaged to be married. She obviously was somewhat prepared.

Now my step-daughter is wanting to graduate.  School has always been a bit of a challenge for her.  She has ADD, and learns very visually.  Public school was a nightmare for her. She came to live with her father and me in her eight grade year.  By ninth we actually received permission from the court to homeschool her.

She has done much better in the homeschool environment.  She focuses better and has picked up a lot of study skills.  She has learned to capitalize on her visual learning style to help her understand concepts.

She was made to repeat the first grade. Now she is eighteen and wants to finish high school, but is only in her junior year.
She came to me, asking what she had to do to finish earlier than planned.

So... I'm praying about what to do.

This summer she is planning to go on a mission's trip to Alaska with two of her sisters and a couple youth groups.  Can I think that she is ready to travel to Alaska, but not graduate high school?

I really want to be led by the Lord in this. She is a girl that has gone through some traumatic stuff in her life.  Homeschooling has given this girl a way to heal and overcome and grow in the Lord.  I've seen how far she has come, and I'm in awe of how great God has been. I thought that keeping her on the original graduation timeline was giving her more time to grow and learn and heal.  But maybe she knows that she is ready for high school to be over, even if I want to keep hold a little longer.

As I pray about this, I am comforted by the fact that God has her in His hands.  He loaned her to me for a few years, but His plan is greater than my dreams for her.  Homeschooling was a part of her life, not her entire life.

I probably will come up with a plan of action for her early graduation, as God leads.  The biggest question is, above and beyond academics, what do I want her to know?  What's important?

Christ.

She needs more time with Him.
