Megan and I have been using Christian Light education's first grade math this year. I purchased the flag card system with it, cringing at the price. It seemed a lot for flash cards. Then we started using them.
It is such a great system! The flash cards last for two years. The Teacher's Guide instructs in what card to practice when. As the number of facts your child learns increases, the cards slowly get split into categories, such as new facts, daily facts, and then different days of the week. This keeps the facts rotated well so that the student keeps reviewing them, but isn't overwhelmed. Mixed with the book work and speed drills, Megan has a very great beginning in math!
Christian Light Education utilizes a spiral method of teaching math. Concept are repeated and reviewed often. Having used both mastery and spiral, my children seem to retain facts so much beret with a spiral method. The constant review keeps things fresh in their heads. Plus, in a homeschool situation, I can work to ensure mastery of concepts so nothing slips through the cracks.
