In our study of money, we are learning about so many facets. Laura's studies are a lot more in-depth than Megan's. Laura is studying a lot about stewardship and gaining life skills along the way.
One of Laura's life skills is learning about bank accounts. She learned about having a checking account today. She looked at mom and dad's statement. I also found a site online that allows for free printable checks, deposit tickets, and even a check register. The exciting part was being able to personalize the fake checks just for my daughter.
Laura practiced writing checks, filling out deposit tickets, and even balancing the check register. Mommy taught her what a credit and debit are, and how to keep a running balance in the register. We also talked about debit cards and credit cards and the difference between them.
These are important life skills that just aren't focused on any longer. So many high school students graduate unable to handle money. They haven't been taught how to handle these life skills. They can't balance a check book. They don't know how to save. They don't know don't give to God. They rack up debt that will take forever to pay off, or that will lead them to bankruptcy.
Teaching our children money skills is something that is often overlooked, but it so vital. I think many adults could use these lessons... including me in some areas. Money decisions are often looked at in a practical sense... and that is important; but money decisions are spiritual decisions. There are Biblical principles concerning money. Christ wouldn't have talked about money if it was unimportant. In fact, the Bible addresses money quite a bit. My goal is to learn or relearn these principles and share them with my children so that they avoid costly mistakes and can honor God with their choices on money.
