Christmas... and Santa. Yesterday my sister emailed me a website called Portable North Pole. On this site, parents can enter information and pictures of your child. This information is then personalized and sent to the child as a video message. This video message show Santa talking directly to the child. It is very cute. I decided to participate for Megan.
When she watched the video, I was shocked at how excited and into it she was. She was answering Santa on the video. When he said her name, her eyes got really big and she smiled. She kept nodding her head as if Santa could really see her. When Santa showed the pictures of Megan that I had downloaded to the video, Megan was thrilled.
This should have delighted me. And honestly, it was cute. Several years ago this would have thrilled me as much as it did my little four year old daughter. But I found Christ a few years ago, and nothing has been the same since.
I didn't react the way I expected. While there is nothing necessarily wrong with Santa, I wasn't thrilled. Here was a high tech method of telling my daughter that Santa is real... and she totally ate it up. I strive daily to have the same impact for Christ in the lives of my children that one little programmable video did in a couple minutes for Santa Claus... a myth.
This video made my daughter feel that Santa was talking directly to her. I would rather her learn to hear the voice of God. I now wonder if, when my daughter gets older and realizes that Santa is not real, if she'll hold the same doubts about Christ. We try to make Jesus a reality. We try to focus on Him during Christmas instead of a jolly, fat guy. We read the Christmas story from the Bible. We even usually have a birthday cake for Jesus. But, after seeing my 4 year old's reaction to a video, I wonder if my husband and I are doing enough. The Christmas story read by Dad should have more of an impact than a fancy, programmable video.
I totally plan to do more to make Christ a reality in our home; not only at Christmas but throughout our every day.
