The Eggsperiment started with an egg soaking in vinegar for three days. Then, we moved on to soaking the egg in corn syrup. Neither Laura nor I expected the results we received.
Before the corn syrup, the egg's shell was disintegrated. It has swollen with water from the vinegar. We were afraid to mess with it too much for fear of breaking it. Now, after the corn syrup, the swollen appearance was gone.
The egg now was squishy and deflated looking. We noticed that the egg had lost the water that it had absorbed when soaking in the vinegar. Instead, the corn syrup was watery. The corn syrup had drawn the water out of the egg's membrane that it had absorbed in the vinegar.
This time, though we still had to be careful, the egg was more easily handled. Laura felt it and touched the soft outer membrane.
She then broke the egg to see what the inside looked like. Yes, it looked like a yoke. However, the yoke was hardened. In fact, the first time Laura tried to stab it with a fork, the fork slid off.
This was such an interesting experiment. Laura enjoyed the discoveries each time. It made the wait as the egg soaked in the various solutions totally worth the anticipation.
