The funny thing was that this activity was supposed to be a Math Activity. We counted the objects that we had lined up. Then, as had happened with Job, we began to take objects away.
Each time we recounted the objects after we took something away. It was interesting to tell the story of Job in this way, showing the loss. The block represented Job's home. The piece of cereal represented food. The little doll represented Job's children. The coin represented money. Job lost all of these things and more.
Eventually we got to nothing left. It was then that the concept of zero was introduced. However, I was reminded at this point that, even though Job had lost everything, he still had God.
Slowly we added the objects back one at a time. Each time Megan recounted. The only problem was that we had to "pretend" the cereal was there since Megan ate it when it was taken away. The moral of the story had a deeper meaning than just some random math lesson. It was a true lesson on counting your blessings.
