It started as an innocent conversation with my 6th grader. "What do you think of that book I got you from the library?" I asked Laura the other day.
She looked at me... actually she glared at me. "Mom, it's too easy. I'm not a baby, you know."
"What's the matter with it?" I asked.
"When you pick out books, most of the time you pick ones that are too easy. It makes me feel dumb." She answered.
I had to think about it for a bit. I know that Laura is a great reader. I picked out books from a book list that I trusted. I grabbed one from the library for Laura because it looked interesting. Yes, it was a grade below her grade level on the Accelerated Reader list, but that never seemed to be an issue before. I didn't think it would matter if the story was great. Maybe it wouldn't, but I saw plainly that my daughter feels bored and wants to be challenged in this area a little more.
Laura is a good reader, and I usually have her do quite a bit of reading. We also have made read aloud time a priority. Bumping her up some never occurred to me. I know that many homeschoolers become very good readers, but it sometimes doesn't dawn on me that Laura is now in the sixth grade or that she might be looking for more challenging reading.
So, I took two of the books that she has been reading off of the to-do list. Instead I assigned the read aloud that we had just started as her reader. She has read two chapters of it on her own, narrated it back to me, and loves it. She asked me for the unabridged version of Little Women that we have sitting on the shelf. We'll get to it.
So, the small stack of books I have that I planned to be read alouds are now her readers. Now I guess I need to look for some new read alouds. The readers I had bought will be saved for Megan. Personally, I think this is a good problem to have. I'm smiling as I take a new look at my trusty list and see what adventures we can go on together next.
