While this wasn't the best picture, I wanted to show Laura's first DITHOR(Drawn Into the Heart of Reading) project. She did a Loyalty Graph. She spent five days tracking the times she showed certain biblical character traits. I put the graph right on the wall for her to see every day. It was a great way to bring the character traits into our lives that we had been learning about throughout reading The Secret of the Golden Cowrie. While DITHOR offers three options for the end of book projects, we used the one that brought our Bible to life.
Laura enjoyed this project. The first couple of days she just thought about what she had done the day before to show these traits. After a day or two, though, she began to think about what she could do that day or the next to show these traits. It was touching to see my daughter think about and plan to do things to represent Christ. To see her do them was wonderful! I love how DITHOR brings our Bible into the story we were reading. The Secret of the Golden Cowrie is a Christian novel, but the added character traits study brought a lot of depth of thinking to the reading. Laura had to look for characters that represented these traits in the story, then find ways to relate this to her own life. This required a lot more thought than just answering questions on the story line.
I am excited about our next book. I am having Laura read The Secret School by Avi. This has a bit of a lower reading level, but it is such a great book that I couldn't pass it up!
