The little pout on my daughter's face perfectly mirrors this week in many ways. It was one of those weeks where I hope and pray we don't repeat things next week.
First, we didn't even begin until Tuesday. All the public schooled kids in our family were off Monday, so I decided we would be too. That way they could all spend time together.
So, Tuesday and Wednesday were a bit on the normal side. Then here came Thursday and Friday. The snow was blowing and drifting. The public schools were cancelled. I had a house of bored children. Yet I still wanted Laura to do school. I would rather her work when we are stuck at home than in the spring or summer when it is beautiful outside.
I have learned that this is not an easy task. Laura was not happy about having to work on school when her sisters (Tasha too for the most part) had no school. This has been a problem since the beginning of homeschooling. Laura just doesn't want to be working on stuff when her sisters are bumming around.
We did get stuff accomplished, however. Laura did her work. Yesterday she pouted as she did it all day. I think she stalled more than worked, but I stood firm. Today, she decided to get it done early. She did Timzit with Jasmine, who had used the program when she was younger. They actually worked on the program for quite awhile. Jasmine would time Laura and Laura would race to get the facts done by the time the timer was done.
Math - Laura did math all four days. I cut down on the number of pages for a couple days in her ACE math so she could use the Timzit and the flashcards. I think they are helping her immensely.
Social Studies - Laura reworked some of her map work to relearn some of the basics. It came back to her pretty easily. She has covered Archipelago twice this year now. I find that funny cause I had no clue what that was the first time. Guess it isn't just Laura learning.
Science - Laura has been studying rockets, force, thrust, gravity, and even a little space this week. She learned about model rockets. She will be moving on to water next week.
Bible - We have been reading about Paul this week. We are learning about lessons Paul learned from Jesus.
Language Arts - We began a new language arts curriculum this week. While everything else from this company is alright, I have to say that the Language Arts is just okay. I don't like spelling at all. I'm switching back to two other different programs for Language Arts. Laura just did better with these other materials.
Reading - Laura read four chapters in Song of the Brook. She came up to me after the second day and told me she likes this book even more than Secret in the Maple Tree. I agreed. It is better. When I told Laura there was a third book in fifth grade she was excited. She likes the characters. I think she relates to Hilda, a girl her own age.
This week is over. I am planning next week and adjusting things here and there.
