Snowy Weather and a Bad Attitude

Do you remember having snow days as a kid in school?  Today (and tomorrow according to the school website) my public schooled kids had a snow day.  With several inches falling, several more expected, and blowing and drifting, the schools have shut down.  That leaves my homeschoolers.

Tasha is still waiting for her curriculum to arrive, so she only had science and reading.  That wasn't the case for poor Laura.  She wasn't very happy with me when I made her do her schoolwork.  In fact, she was downright angry.  She complained or stalled nearly all day.

The only activity she enjoyed all day was when we worked on the map activity for Geography.

I let her sit in the living room with her sisters to work on some of her assignments.  I thought that would cheer her up a bit.  As you can see from the pictures, she still wasn't happy.

She finally finished her work.  I let her burn off some extra energy by going sledding.  Sadly, I have a sneaky suspicion that tomorrow will be just as difficult.  Laura doesn't like it when her sisters are home and she has to do school.  She has a child sense of fairness at the age of nine.  In fact, "That isn't fair" seems to be a favorite phrase when she feels slighted.  I thought about letting her off, but then realized that I just can't.  There are so many days where we go and do other things, or do nothing.  There are days when I'm sick or Laura is sick, and very little gets done.  The weather may be difficult to travel in outside, but as a homeschooler, Laura only has to travel from her bed to the dining or living room.  She doesn't have to get on a big yellow bus in the cold and ride with 60 other kids to a building to do her work.  She won't have to make up this day at the end of the school year when it is 80 degrees outside and sunny.

And for those who think that a snow day is filled with memories.  When Laura focuses on her work, starts early, and gets it done she completes school by one at the latest.  That leaves a lot of time for snow fun.
