Weekly Wrap-up 1-30-09

Despite not doing much on Monday, we kept very busy the rest of the week. We actually got a lot covered and are on schedule (For Once).

BIBLE - Laura read five stories in The Book by Tyndale. She just finished reading Abimelech Kills His Brothers. In the New Testament Laura read Matthew 25-27. In Prims she finished Communitites badge and began the Church Badge.

MATH - Laura did four lessons in Abeka Arithmetic plus a worksheet from a workbook that reinforces multiplication. We went over flashcards a couple times with the facts she has learned so far.

SCIENCE - Laura did 12 pages in her Science Pace. We did lots of reading about Ants using library books.

SOCIAL STUDIES - Laura has been studying Communities this week. She's been reading about them in an old textbook I found at the Library.

READING - Laura did two lessons in her reading skills book. She has read 11 chapters in The Secret In the Maple Tree. We have also read 11 chapters in Charlotte's Web as a read a-loud.

LANGUAGE ARTS - Laura did four lessons in Grammar. She is learning about quotations. Spelling this week brought about a change. We had been using Spelling Workout. Laura didn't love it, but she didn't hate it either. A friend of mine gave me some school stuff and told me to use it or pass it on. In the stuff she gave me was a third grade spelling book from Zaner-Bloser that had come from one of the elementary schools. Laura was looking at it and asked me, "Hey mom, can I do this one instead? I like it better." I looked at the spelling ook and realized that it looked pretty cool. Each list covers some Thinking skills, Phonics skills, Reading skills and Writing Skills. It also has a Vocab section. This is in each list! There is lots of practice this way with using the words, not just memorizing the spelling. So, we started it mid-week. Ugh! Laura took her spelling test twice. The first time she didn't do great. She hadn't done all the lessons and really hadn't reviewed much. We really don't have an accurate assessment yet of how she is going to do with the program, but we are going to give it a couple weeks. I do like that the areas where she writes her spelling words are created with the dashed handwriting lines so she can practice writing the words in cursive.

WRITING - In Cursive Laura learned 'U' and 'V'. I really need to get her a new cursive writer in the next couple weeks. She is nearly finished with this one.
