Magic Multiplication Beans

Three times four equals?
Seven Beans times Two Groups is?

Laura figures out how to write the number sentence.

Oops, horrible picture.

"I think I get it mom."

Laura is starting to learn about Multiplication. She is a little behind according to National Standards, but right on track with Indiana Standards. The concept of multiplication has been introduced in the last couple math lessons.

Today, Laura came to me and asked me to help explain. When I did, she just looked at me and said, "Huh?" I knew right then and there that she wasn't going to understand this without extra help. I began to think of what would help her 'Get It'. In my Pantry I pulled out the beans.

We played with the beans for a bit, grouping them together to make different problems. I could see the understanding slowly come to her. All I could think was that we need to use a lot more manipulatives for math. Her level of understanding totally increased.
