Weekly Checkup: September 24-October 5, 2018

I have two weeks to post.  It's been a busy couple of weeks with lots going on, so I didn't get around to posting last week about our progress.  I decided that it was fine to post about a couple of weeks at one time.

History:

We began to read about Babylon, including the stories of Daniel, Meshack, Sadrach, and Abednego.  After learning about Nebuchadnezzar, we jumped in to learning about Belshazzar, as well as Cyrus, prince of Persia, and his Uncle Darius, prince of Media.  We learned about the captivity of the Jews in Babylon and the prophecies of Isaiah. Finally, we began learning bout Cyrus allowing the Jewish people to rebuild the Temple and the wall.

In her Bible, Megan read much of the book of Esther.  She also read roughly eight chapters in The Story of the Ancient World.  She also continues to read Within the Palace Gates.

Bible:

In Bible study, Megan read about Daniel and Esther.  In her New Testament study, she learned about Paul's letter to the Colossians and Paul's letter to Philippi and Thessalonica.

Science:

Megan continued to read the book Birds of the Air.  She learned about Swallows, Swifts, Wood-pigeons, pheasants, partridges, jackdaws, Cormorants, gulls, and Martins. She learned about the eating habits of birds.

Poetry:

Megan finished learning Robert Frost's Dust of Snow.  She is not picking one of the poems she has learned for memorization.

McGuffey:

Megan completed nine McGuffey lessons.  She read "Things to be Learned," "About Oranges," and began "Stories about Birds."  These stories themselves are easy for Megan, but the writing level is my focus.  She has vocabulary and spelling words such as scarcely, poplar, Mediterranean, quantities, linnets, exhibition, and astonishing.

Megan finished copying the poem, Hens's Nest by John Clare.  She leaned about the proper use of "A" and "An." She learned about Nouns, singular and plural, and how to change one to the other. Now she is studying letter writing and addressing envelopes.

 Literature:

Megan finished reading The Bridge in Drawn Into the Heart of Reading.  She studied the Biblical Character traits of Love, Compassion, and Tolerance, reading the story of the Good Samaritan in Luke.  She further learned about story moods.  She is now working on her project for the book.

For her own independent reading, she finished the book, The Scripture Sleuth. She then began the book When Will This Cruel War be Over by Barry Denenberg, part of the Dear America series.

Read Aloud:

We finished the Penderwicks series last week, which was bittersweet, with the final book The Penderwicks at Last.  We said goodbye to Rosalind, Skye, Jane, Batty, Ben, and Lydia... for now.  We have started Anne of Green Gables this week. I felt it was time for my talkative, imaginative girl to meet another talkative, imaginative girl.  We are also reading through the Harry Potter series in the evening.  Megan is now beginning Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Dictation:

Megan made it through a couple more passages in her dictation.

Math:

In her ACE Math, Megan worked on more long division, place value, and fractions.  She also began an ACE Science pace that actually deals with math concepts, in the measuring, weighing, and temperature categories.  In Life of Fred: Goldfish, she covered three chapters which multiplication, deciding if a sale was a good deal or not, logic, and sequencing.

Piano:

Megan only went to piano once because of illness.  She is working on her Christmas recital piece.
