As homeschoolers, don't we just LOVE book lists? I have them everywhere! I could come up with several book lists from kindergarten thru college. Some lists that I have I trust more than others. I am a big proponent of reading quality books. As a Christian, I am also cautious about what I read and what I allow my children to put in their minds. I'm always on the lookout for things that glorify Christ.
Stories that we read as children can have a life-long impact. I know that some of the characters I read about as a child have stayed with me, as friends of a sort. I want my children to love reading, but I also want them to develop a discernment about what they put into their minds and hearts. These stories will imprint themselves in my child... Possibly for eternity.
Today, as I was working on some planning, I spent a good hour at the library. Knowing the first topic we will be studying, I wanted to see what the library had. Saving money is a big deal right now. I intend to use every resource from the library that I can. I have to be careful, though, since many of the books on science and history are filled with evolution. Since they are library books, I can't just mark out the parts I don't agree with. I also pre-read nearly every story to make sure it meets my standards.
For children's books to use with Megan, the selection, even in our tiny library, is wonderful. There are tons of picture books and story books on a vast array of topics. By the time I had finished researching our first topic for Megan, my list contained 25 titles. Since our study is scheduled for at least 20 days, this will match up pretty close.
Below is a snapshot of my list. I am learning that planning your own work is challenging. I am also learning, however, that choosing my own sources is kind of fun.
