Free summer movies have been offered at our local movie theater for a couple weeks now. This week was the first week we went. As usual, it was crowded and loud. However, this year I decided to give it a go with Megan. Last year she was too young to sit still and pay attention long enough to watch an entire movie. Since she can now do that at home, I decided to try the free movie. Megan did wonderfully.
The free movie this week was planet 51. I didn't read any reviews first, and I probably should have. Some of the humor was not appropriate for my children. Oh, the teenagers were fine, but it wasn't good for the ten year old. For Megan, the three year old, it went right over her head.
Except for some of the crude humor, the movie wasn't bad. The story centers on what would happen to aliens on their planet if humans came. It was reverse of alien invasion of earth. It takes the fears that Hollywood has banked on for years, hostile aliens versus E.T.-like friendly aliens, and has the aliens on their planet deal with these fears from a human landing.
I think some of the humor could have been changed to better suit a family friendly movie. Other than that, the movie was okay. It was funny in parts, and a good premise. It wasn't what I had hoped, but that's to be expected, I guess.
Next weeks movie is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I don't know if we'll go since we have already seen that movie. The free movie Wednesday goes for a few more weeks, though. Hopefully there will be a gem in there somewhere.
