Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit - A Review

Meek and Quiet?  That has rarely been me.  I think I bought this book out of curiosity, and out of a desire to be all that God wants me to be.  I've been looking for books to encourage and educate me in homeschooling my children.  There's no support group that I can easily get to, so books and blogs are often my support right now.

Teri Maxwell, the author, did an amazing job in this book.  She talks about some subjects I don't think I've read a lot about in other homeschooling books.  She talks openly about the things that can steal away peace in a mom's soul.  Having a meek and quiet spirit is tough when you are not at peace at all.  From fear, worry, disorganization, to anger, Teri Maxwell gives Biblical solutions and ideas of things that worked for her in her many years of homeschooling.

One of the most touching chapters is the chapter on depression.  Let's face facts... Christians deal with depression.  Moms that homeschool often deal with a lot of pressure and stress on a daily basis.  God may have called us to homeschool our children, but that doesn't automatically inoculate us from the physical, mental, and spiritual ups and downs.  Sometimes those downs can be like sinking in quick sand.  Mrs. Maxwell gave at least six things to work on when battling depression.  These things helped her.  She admits that there was no miracle cure, just a constant leaning on the Lord and meditating on His Word.

I am re-reading the book, this time with my notebook in hand.  There is a study guide available for purchase, but I didn't get that at this time.  Instead, I find a longing in myself to search the scriptures Mrs. Maxwell lists, to meditate on them myself.  I was once told that a truly anointed sermon, book, or even piece of music would not draw you to the creator of the work but to the Creator of the World.  Mrs. Maxwell has done that.  As I read Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit, I felt drawn to my Bible.

Teri Maxwell and her husband have other books for sale, and I truly hope to read them.  I've requested a couple of them for my birthday.  Books on organization, books on practical aspects of teaching children at home, books on keeping the hearts of your children for Jesus; I must admit that I am eagerly looking forward to the wisdom of a family that has homeschooled their large family for over twenty years.
