Laughing Aloud With Reading

I was standing in the kitchen doing the dishes.  Laura was cracking up laughing in the other room.  I threw down my dish rag, intent to lay down the law.  After all, Laura was supposed to be working on her school work, not messing around or playing.  To my surprise, Laura sat on the couch with her school book in her hand.  I glanced around to see if there was some reason she was laughing.  Was her sister distracting her?  Was Laura playing with one of the cats?  I stood in the doorway of the living room for a few minutes waiting to see the cause of the laughter.

Laura didn't even notice me.  She was reading her ACE book, The Red Rag Riddle.  Suddenly, she began laughing again.  I asked her what was so funny.

"The book." She answered.

That was all I needed to hear.  I left the room with a smile on my lips and a warm feeling in my heart.  Her reading book was making her laugh.

We've read some books together that were funny.  It's rare that Laura finds one to read on her own that has her cracking up on the couch.

I had read so many negative reviews on ACE.  Even some of the reading selections were criticized in some reviews.  I am sure many of the books are more serious.  Yet, to see my nine year old enjoying a book like she is enjoying The Red Rag Riddle makes me feel good.  She loves the silly jokes and the heart-warming story line.

I'm sure I'll write a complete review when we are finished.  For now, I just had to type out that wonderful moment so I don't forget.  Some days are very rewarding as a homeschooling mother.  This was one of them.
