An Anniversary and a New Love

My husband and I discovered something new on our wedding anniversary a couple weeks ago.  After all these years, we were able to get away for a couple days with no children.  My husband picked a place he had visited as a child for us to travel to and explore.

We then learned we both love hiking.

I hadn't been hiking since I was a young girl.  I was a bit worried that the health issues I have been battling would make the trek too challenging physically.  However, I was shocked that I hiked nine miles before I even thought to check the pedometer on my phone.

We went to a State Park about three hours from our home.  It was so incredibly, breathtakingly beautiful.  The autumn leaves added a level of God's beauty to the water and caves that captured me.  I must have taken hundreds of pictures.

We ended up hiking twelve miles.  The last three showed me how out of shape I am.  The hills and steps got to me.  I had been hydrating with water, only to have my hands swell because that intense of a workout to a body not used to it will throw off the electrolyte balance.

The Park also had an old mill with a three story historical museum, a pioneer village, cabins, an old mercantile, and an apothecary.  We enjoyed the sights of the old fashioned sights... For an hour.

The pioneer village and mill was crowded.  The trails were not.

My husband and I both loved hiking so much that we are longing desperately to take our children.  We are looking into investing in quality hiking boots for us all.

I knew that my health issues were going to limit me.  I've been seeing a doctor for treatment, but it is a slow process.  I can only do so much, but I can do my best to prepare my body for walking and hiking.  I began walking every morning, and some evenings.  I am walking miles each day, and I love it.

I have to be outside.  I can't be inside trying to workout.  The outside air just calms my soul and reduces stress.

I am hoping my homeschool adventures in the future will begin to have more times of nature walks, hiking, and getting out of our four walls!
